#EndSARS: Open the Floodgates of Reform: Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Stakeholder Management Specialist

Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan:

#EndSARS is a movement of citizens of Nigeria, expressed in organised, conscious, constitutional social action, demanding the outlaw of SARS to halt the infamous history of police cruelty, extortion and arbitrariness superintended by the police in Nigeria through SARS. However, #EndSARS speaks metaphorically to the troubles with Nigeria – troubles that are oriented in and found expressions in Nigeria’s dysfunctional governmental structure. Accordingly, as a mark of sincere commitment to tackling this issue, the Nigeria Police Force as a key agency for security governance should be unbundled.

States should have autonomous policing systems that are staffed, funded and accountable to the respective state governments. And this process should open floodgates of reforms in all sectors, because the operation of the so-called federal structure in Nigeria is incapable of delivering concrete, quantifiable and sustainable development. So, the people of Nigeria should resist divisiveness and sustain the spirit of #EndSARS as a content of civil liberty organic to democracy, and in our case, serving as a counterpoise to our unpopular, largely non-representative, and less participatory democracy.
