Dangote Refinery signs Fuel Export Deal with Cameroon

Dangote Group has secured a fuel supply agreement with Cameroon’s state-owned oil refining company, Société Nationale de Raffinage (SONARA), in a deal that could deepen Nigeria’s influence in Africa’s petroleum products market.

The agreement, signed on October 22, 2026, in Lagos, also involves MRS Oil & Gas Company Limited, a Nigerian petroleum marketing and distribution company.

SONARA disclosed the development in a statement released on Friday, October 30, saying the partnership is intended to strengthen Cameroon’s access to refined petroleum products and provide a more stable supply amid rising global fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The companies, however, did not disclose the volume of petroleum products covered by the agreement, its financial value or how long the supply arrangement would last.

The agreement comes as Cameroon continues to rely on imported refined petroleum products following the shutdown of its only refinery in 2019.

An explosion damaged SONARA’s refinery that year, forcing the country to depend on foreign suppliers to meet domestic fuel demand.

The disruption has exposed Cameroon’s petroleum market to fluctuations in international prices and potential supply interruptions.

The new arrangement with Dangote Group and MRS Oil & Gas is expected to provide an additional source of petroleum products as the country seeks to strengthen its energy security.

Dangote Expands Petroleum Exports Across Africa

The agreement represents another step in Dangote Refinery’s expansion into the African downstream petroleum market.

The facility was developed to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products while positioning the country as a potential regional supplier.

Its export activities have gathered momentum in recent months as the refinery increases deliveries to international markets.

In March 2026, Dangote Refinery exported 456,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products to African markets through 12 cargoes lifted by international traders. The shipments were destined for Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Ghana and Togo.

The refinery had also exported petrol to Cameroon, Angola, Ghana and South Africa in December 2024, alongside diesel and aviation fuel shipments to European markets.

More recently, Botswana indicated interest in securing a fuel supply agreement with the Nigerian refinery as it seeks to diversify its petroleum import sources and reduce exposure to international supply disruptions.
