Match Report

Manchester City is experiencing a mini-crisis as they succumbed to their fourth consecutive defeat. It is only the second time in Pep Guardiola’s career that a team he managed has suffered a four-defeat streak. The previous three defeats were against Bournemouth, Tottenham and Sporting.

The champions started the game positively, controlling possession and trying to make inroads into Brighton’s penalty area. Their efforts were rewarded when Erling Haaland scored in the 23rd minute of the match. He burst through the two center-backs and attempted to score but Verbruggen made a brave save by deflecting the ball. Haaland muscled his way in to try again and found the back of the net!

Manchester City kept the momentum going into halftime as they mostly kept possession of the ball. Brighton started finding their feet as the match progressed, playing some fluidic football to start attacking City’s penalty area. They failed to convert six big chances in the second half – amassing 1.43 of the Expected Goals. Until Joao Pedro finally produced the equaliser for the seagulls.

Danny Welbeck trapped a cross from the left which caused a scramble in the penalty area. Pedro showed the most initiative to create an opportunity and slam home from close range to make it 1-1. Five minutes later, Pedro assisted the substitute O’Riley, who scored from a one-on-one position to give Brighton the lead. The game ended with Brighton trying to keep the pressure going while City’s few efforts to score an equaliser didn’t materialise.

Pep Guardiola could only hide his face as the game went away from Manchester City. They are still second in the league standings and would look for a quick turnaround in form after the international break. Brighton are now 4th in the premier league table and will look to keep the great form going.
