A modern financial technology platform designed to simplify how people move and manage money across Africa is hiring a Backend Engineer – Fintech & Platform to join its engineering team and take ownership of the backend systems powering its product.

Location: Hybrid (Lagos) / Remote (Nigeria)

Role Objective

This role is primarily focused on backend engineering, financial integrations, APIs and transaction systems. You should also be comfortable working with the production environment in which your applications run — including deployments, containers, logs, monitoring and basic cloud infrastructure.

The candidate will build, maintain and continuously improve secure and reliable backend systems powering our financial products.

You will work closely with the founders and engineering team to develop new functionality, maintain existing services, integrate external financial infrastructure and ensure our production systems remain reliable.

Responsibilities

Backend Development

Build and maintain backend services using C# / .NET.
Design and maintain clean, secure and reliable APIs.
Develop new product functionality and improve existing services.
Maintain and improve existing codebases.
Write clean, testable and production-ready code.
Investigate and resolve backend bugs and performance issues.
Participate in architecture and technical decision-making.

Financial & Transaction Systems

Build and maintain systems supporting financial activities such as:

Wallets and balances
Transactions
Deposits and withdrawals
Transfers
Asset conversions
Transaction history
Fees and limits

Ensure financial operations remain accurate and consistent across different transaction states and failure scenarios.

External Integrations

Build and maintain integrations with third-party services including:

Payment providers
Wallet infrastructure
Banking and payout services
Identity and verification services
Other financial infrastructure

Handle:

API integrations
Webhooks
Provider callbacks
Timeouts
Failed transactions
Pending transactions
Retries
Duplicate events

External provider failures should not result in incorrect balances or inconsistent transaction records.

Data Integrity & Reliability

Help ensure the integrity of financial data and transactions.

You should understand and implement appropriate approaches for:

Database transactions
Concurrency
Idempotency
Transaction state management
Reconciliation
Error recovery
Audit trails

Prevent problems such as duplicate transactions, incorrect balances and inconsistent transaction states.

Database & Performance

Work with relational databases to:

Design and maintain database structures.
Write and optimize queries.
Improve application performance.
Manage database transactions correctly.
Investigate performance bottlenecks.
Maintain data consistency.

Security

Follow strong engineering practices around:

Authentication
Authorization
API security
Sensitive data
Input validation
Access control
Secrets and credentials
Audit logging

Security should be considered throughout development rather than added afterwards.

PRoduction & Platform Ownership

You are not expected to be a dedicated DevOps Engineer.

However, as a Backend Engineer in a startup environment, you should be comfortable owning the applications you build through production.

This includes:

Deploying backend services.
Working with Docker and containerized applications.
Understanding and working with existing CI/CD pipelines.
Managing development, testing/UAT and production environments.
Reading application and server logs.
Monitoring application health.
Troubleshooting production issues.
Managing environment configurations and secrets appropriately.
Understanding basic cloud/server infrastructure.
Understanding database backup and recovery processes.
Working with specialist infrastructure engineers when deeper DevOps expertise is required.

Testing & Code Quality

Write appropriate unit and integration tests.
Test critical transaction scenarios.
Review code and participate in engineering discussions.
Document important technical decisions and integrations.
Support QA during releases.
Investigate and resolve production issues.
Maintain high standards for code quality and reliability.

Required Skills

Must Have

3+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
Strong C# and .NET / ASP.NET Core experience.
Strong understanding of REST APIs.
Strong SQL and relational database experience.
Experience integrating third-party APIs.
Experience working with webhooks.
Strong understanding of authentication and authorization.
Understanding of database transactions and concurrency.
Experience building and maintaining production applications.
Working knowledge of Docker.
Comfortable deploying and troubleshooting backend applications in production.
Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
Strong debugging and problem-solving ability.
Ability to work independently and take ownership.

Improve reliability and code quality where necessary.
Reduce dependency on individual engineers for knowledge of critical systems.
Maintain clear documentation of systems you own.
