Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday ordered the arrest and detention of six promoters of the Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX) platform over allegations of a $1 billion scam.
The order follows an ex parte motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleging that the suspects operated CBEX through a shell company, ST Technologies International Limited, with promises of returns up to 100% on cryptocurrency investments with the funds reportedly not held in any Nigerian bank accounts.
The six individuals named in the court order are Adefowora Abiodun Olanipekun, Adefowora Oluwanisola, Emmanuel Uko, Seyi Oloyede, Avwerosuo Otorudo, and Chukwuebuka Ehirim all residing in Lagos or Ogun state.
By this order, the EFCC has been given the go-ahead to detain the suspects currently at large upon arrest pending the conclusion of investigations and potential prosecution. The anti-graft agency is said to be working in collaboration with Interpol and other international agencies to secure the arrest and conviction of the suspects as well as trying to recover the lost money for its owners.
