JAMB Warns Universities Against Issuing Admission Letters to Candidates

JAMB warns only admissions processed through CAPS and accepted by candidates on the platform are recognised for official purposes

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned Nigerian universities against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that only the board is authorised to issue official admission letters for entry into tertiary institutions.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

According to Aina, JAMB is the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.

He expressed concern that candidates often believe admission documents issued by institutions are valid simply because they appear to have originated from the institutions offering them admission.

The registrar urged universities engaging in the practice to desist and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

Aina also recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to conduct admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

He said admissions conducted outside the platform were illegal and invalid, stressing that institutions could not substitute their own admission letters for the official documents issued by JAMB.

According to him, only admissions processed through CAPS and accepted by candidates on the platform are recognised for official purposes, including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The warning reinforces JAMB’s position that candidates must confirm and accept their admission offers through CAPS to ensure their admissions are officially recognised.

Candidates offered admission by universities and other tertiary institutions should therefore verify their admission status on the JAMB platform and ensure they obtain the appropriate official documentation.
