Michael Uchenna Chukwu, a veteran financial executive, Chartered Accountant and private equity investor with more than four decades of experience across banking, taxation, investment management and corporate governance, has joined the Board of SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc as an Independent Non-Executive Director.
His appointment, effective September 2026, adds a financial services veteran with extensive banking and investment experience to the insurer’s board.
Chukwu is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Assetswise Capital Ltd, a private equity firm he has led since 2007. Through the firm, he has been involved in private equity investments, bringing more than a decade and a half of experience in investment management and value creation.His career, however, stretches much further back and includes senior leadership positions at some of Nigeria’s notable financial institutions.
Decades Long Banking Career
Chukwu served as the founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Spring Bank Plc between 2005 and 2007, where he led the creation of the bank following the merger of six financial institutions.
Before Spring Bank, he was Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guardian Express Bank, serving from 2001 to 2005.
His earlier career included senior positions at ACB International Bank, First Atlantic Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), FCMB, Citizens International Bank and Fidelity Bank, as well as professional experience at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
The breadth of these roles has given Chukwu experience across banking operations, financial management, corporate restructuring and professional services.
Public-Sector Experience
Chukwu also has experience in public-sector financial administration having served as Executive Chairman of the Ebonyi State Internal Revenue Board between 2019 and 2020, he served
During his tenure, he was credited with restructuring the board’s operations and automating its processes. The company said these reforms helped double the state’s internally generated revenue within one year.
Chartered Accountant and Tax Professional
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), the Chartered Institute of Management of Nigeria, and the Institute of Directors Nigeria (IoD).
His academic and professional performance dates back to the early stages of his career. He earned a Distinction in the 1980 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination and subsequently emerged first in the ICAN Foundation Examination in 1986.
Chukwu holds a B.Sc. in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and has also undertaken executive education programmes, including the Chief Executive Programme at Lagos Business School in 2003 and the High Potential Leadership Program at Harvard Business School in 2006.
Boardroom experience
Beyond executive management, Chukwu has served as Chairman and/or Director of organisations including Eartholeum Networks Ltd, ENL-NOVA Ltd, Cowry Asset Management Ltd and the National Root Crops Research Institute.
His latest appointment at SUNU Assurances therefore adds to a career that has combined executive management, investment, public-sector reform and board governance.
