Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has extended the state government’s wage award for civil servants by another three months and approved the continuation of its transport subsidy for workers.
The measures are intended to cushion the impact of rising living costs and higher transport expenses on workers and residents.
Makinde announced the extension on Friday, September 18, 2026, after returning to office following his annual leave. He was welcomed at the Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan by Acting Governor Bayo Lawal, labour leaders, civil servants and other government officials.
The wage award is ₦25,000 monthly, while the transport support provides a ₦10,000 subsidy, according to Radio Nigeria. The latest extension will keep the payments running through December.
“I want to assure you today that the wage award will be renewed for another three months. We will also continue with the transport subsidy. I want to thank our workers for their efforts, dedication and support,” Makinde said.
The governor also called for renewed engagement between the state government and labour leaders, saying his administration was aware of the economic pressures confronting workers and residents.
The transport support was initially introduced in March 2026 as a ₦10,000 monthly allowance for civil servants in response to higher fuel and transport costs. The initial programme was announced for three months.
Makinde also used his return to office to defend his decision to hand over to his deputy while on leave, contrasting the arrangement with President Bola Tinubu’s handling of presidential powers during periods when he is away.
He said Oyo State had demonstrated that government could continue to function when the governor was absent, provided responsibilities were properly transferred and officials worked together.
