Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has distanced herself from the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council, saying she is not a member of the council and has chosen to stay out of politics.
Abraham was listed as a member of the Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate of the Lagos APC campaign council unveiled on Thursday ahead of the 2027 elections.
Her name appeared alongside other entertainment figures, including Jide Kosoko, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Akintola, Adebayo Salami, Saheed Balogun and Bukky Wright, as well as Fuji musicians Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Obesere and Adewale Ayuba.
However, Abraham rejected the reported inclusion in an Instagram Story on Thursday.
“I’m not a member of any campaign council. I have said it recently. I am staying out of politics. Please disregard the supposed inclusion of my name in any campaign committee,” she wrote.
The published campaign council document nevertheless continues to list her as one of the 33 members of the directorate.
2023 Criticism
The development comes after Abraham’s highly publicised involvement in the 2023 presidential election, when she expressed support for Bola Tinubu, then the APC presidential candidate.
Her political position attracted criticism on social media, with Abraham saying in March 2023 that some supporters of Peter Obi had petitioned Netflix over her films and targeted brands associated with her.
She also shared screenshots of messages urging Checkers Custard, for which she was an ambassador, to sever ties with her.
The controversy continued after the election. In 2024, Abraham became involved in a separate dispute with social media users over comments she described as defamatory and abusive toward her and her family.
One case involved an X user identified as Big Ayo, who accused Abraham of using money allegedly linked to Tinubu to fund a hair transplant for her husband, actor Kolawole Ajeyemi. Abraham denied the allegation and petitioned cybercrime authorities.
The subsequent arrest of the social media user generated further criticism online. Abraham later clarified that she had not caused the arrest of his mother, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
During an Instagram Live session in July 2024, Abraham spoke emotionally about the sustained online abuse and said she had been pushed to her limit. She also said attacks involving her child had particularly affected her.
The council is headed in the Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate by Toke Benson-Awoyinka as Director, with Kosoko as Co-Director and Badmus as Deputy Director.
