The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of failing to address the worsening security situation in the state amid rising cases of kidnapping, murder and violent attacks.

The opposition party made the allegation in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, following the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The APC said insecurity had become more alarming in Oyo compared to other states in the South-West, accusing the Makinde administration of engaging in “showmanship and unhealthy politicking” instead of strengthening the state’s security architecture.

The party criticised the governor for allegedly shifting blame to the Federal Government despite being the state’s Chief Security Officer.

The recent attacks involved coordinated abductions at Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area.

Governor Makinde had earlier expressed concern over the incident, describing it as a difficult period for the state and calling for the creation of state police during the primaries conducted by the Allied Peoples Movement in Ibadan.

However, the APC alleged that the governor previously opposed the establishment of state police when governors were requested to submit memoranda on the proposal in 2024.

According to the party, the administration weakened collaboration with traditional rulers and other stakeholders in joint security efforts since assuming office in 2019.

The APC also questioned the state government’s spending on surveillance aircraft, claiming that despite billions allegedly spent on procurement, insecurity continued to persist across the state.

The opposition party further alleged poor welfare conditions for operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, accusing the government of failing to provide adequate salaries, insurance and retirement benefits.

The party urged Governor Makinde to take immediate steps to rescue all abducted victims and improve security across Oyo State.
