MTN Nigeria Communications Plc added 7.5 million subscribers in the first half of 2026, lifting its total customer base to 92.2 million as of June 30, according to the company’s H1 financial results. The 92.2 million subscriber base represents an 8.9% year-on-year increase.
Perhaps, more instructive is the stronger demand for the company’s mobile internet services despite prevalent complaints about rapid data depletion.
MTN Nigeria’s active data users increased by 9.3% to 55.7 million, adding 2.5 million users during the six months. Smartphone penetration also increased to 66.4%, while average data usage per subscriber rose 15.1% to 14.8GB.
The increased customer and data usage translated into significant revenue growth with Data revenue contributing ₦1.70 trillion to MTN Nigeria’s reported ₦2.99 trillion total revenue for H1 2026.
Complaints About MTN Data Longevity
In recent weeks, a key discussion on social media has been the rate at which MTN data gets depleted and the resultant exorbitant cost of Internet connectivity.
From Internet conversations monitored by Arbiterz, a lot of MTN subscribers seem to be confused by the rate at which data gets depleted.
A subscriber narrated how a 120GB monthly broadband subscription got exhausted in 10 days despite only making being in the office for seven of those ten days.
This is one of the numerous cases of MTN subscribers complaining in what has snowballed into a class action led by a lawyer @Yettydlaw on X.
For now, the complaints seems not to have affected MTN’s data subscriber base judging by the rate at which the network is adding new subscribers.
