Xiaomi has confirmed that its first wide-format foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, will launch on September 7, putting the Chinese technology giant in the spotlight shortly before Apple’s expected iPhone Ultra unveiling.
The launch date was confirmed by Xiaomi mobile chief Lu Weibing on Weibo, with the timing attracting attention because Apple is scheduled to hold its next major event on September 9.
The close scheduling means Xiaomi could have a brief opportunity to dominate the foldable-phone conversation before Apple takes centre stage with its latest iPhone announcement.
Xiaomi 18 Fold targets the growing foldable market
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will mark the company’s entry into a wider category of foldable smartphones designed to open into a tablet-like display.
Official images released ahead of the launch show the phone in a distinctive red finish. Xiaomi has also revealed some of the device’s display specifications.
The smartphone is expected to feature a 5.38-inch external display that opens into a 7.58-inch internal screen.
That puts it broadly in the same territory as Samsung’s latest book-style foldable, although Xiaomi’s external display is slightly smaller.
Xiaomi introduces its own XRing 03 chip
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the Xiaomi 18 Fold is its processor.
Rather than relying on Qualcomm or MediaTek, Xiaomi is expected to equip the foldable with its own XRing 03 chipset.
Early reports suggest the processor could deliver strong CPU and GPU performance, although the full specifications and real-world performance will only become clear once Xiaomi officially unveils the phone.
The XRing 03 could also represent an important step in Xiaomi’s efforts to develop greater control over the technology powering its premium smartphones.
Global release remains uncertain
Despite Xiaomi’s international smartphone presence, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is currently expected to be limited to the Chinese market.
The company’s promotional activity so far has largely focused on Weibo, while there has been no firm confirmation of a wider international release.
That could limit the phone’s ability to directly challenge Apple in markets such as the UK, Europe and the US.
For now, however, Xiaomi appears more interested in making an impact in China, where the September 7 launch will arrive just ahead of Apple’s expected September 9 event.
Xiaomi takes the spotlight before Apple
The timing of the Xiaomi 18 Fold launch is likely to fuel comparisons with Apple, particularly if the company unveils a polished flagship foldable just days before the iPhone Ultra.
Samsung has also been competing aggressively in the foldable market, making the category increasingly important for major smartphone manufacturers.
With the Xiaomi 18 Fold, the company is betting on a large internal display, a distinctive design and its own processor to attract premium-phone buyers.
More details about the phone, including its cameras, battery, memory configurations, pricing and availability, are expected to emerge when Xiaomi officially launches the device on September 7.
