China issued more than 8,000 visas to citizens of Burkina Faso in 2025 as Beijing and Ouagadougou expand cooperation in trade, industrialisation, agriculture, technology and other areas of their economies.
The figure was disclosed on September 7 by China’s ambassador to Burkina Faso, Zhao Deyong, during a meeting with Burkinabè Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.
The visas covered a range of activities, including business, education, professional assignments and training in China, pointing to an increase in commercial, educational and technical exchanges between the two countries.
The development comes as Burkina Faso seeks to reshape its economic relationship with China around domestic production, technology transfer and greater self-reliance.
Burkina Faso seeks greater industrial capacity
During the meeting, Ouédraogo said his government wanted future cooperation with China to contribute directly to strengthening Burkina Faso’s productive capacity.
The priorities include access to industrial equipment, technology, technical expertise and skills that can help local businesses and industries expand.
Burkina Faso also wants Chinese partnerships to support the processing of raw materials within the country, increase mechanisation and reduce its reliance on imported goods.
The approach reflects the government’s broader emphasis on economic sovereignty and building local capacity rather than depending primarily on external assistance.
Zhao said China was prepared to support Burkina Faso in pursuing a development strategy based on the country’s own priorities and circumstances.
He said Beijing would align its cooperation with the objectives identified by the Burkinabè government and support its efforts towards self-reliant development and modernisation.
China-Burkina Faso cooperation expands
Economic and technical cooperation between the two countries has grown across several sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, defence and technology infrastructure.
Diplomatic relations between China and Burkina Faso were restored in May 2018, after which both governments increasingly described their relationship as a strategic partnership based on mutual interests and development.
Recent discussions have focused on ensuring that existing agreements and Chinese-supported projects translate into more visible economic benefits for Burkina Faso.
One major project is the Pala University Hospital Center in Bobo-Dioulasso, which was inaugurated in December 2025 with Chinese support.
The two countries are also pursuing partnerships in productive industries, including agricultural processing and manufacturing-related projects.
For Burkina Faso, the expanding relationship with China is increasingly being framed around industrial development, skills acquisition and the ability to produce and process more goods domestically.
For Beijing, deeper engagement provides an avenue to expand commercial and diplomatic ties with a West African country seeking new economic partnerships while pursuing a more independent development strategy.
