Oil Nears $100 per Barrel as Trump Weighs ‘Massive Attack’ on Iran

Oil Prices

Global oil prices remained close to the $100-per-barrel mark on Friday after briefly surpassing the level for the first time since May U.S. President Donald Trump signaled he was considering a “massive attack” on Iran, intensifying fears of a wider Middle East conflict that could disrupt global energy supplies.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded around $99 per barrel in European trading after climbing above $100 the previous day. The rally was driven by growing concerns over oil supply disruptions following attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants on Saudi Arabian tankers in the Red Sea, further heightening geopolitical tensions across one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Speaking in an interview with Axios recently, Trump said he was considering “a massive attack” against Iran and indicated that military preparations were already in place. The remarks came as the U.S. military confirmed it had carried out another consecutive night of airstrikes against Iranian targets.

Trump also warned that the United States would respond forcefully to any attacks on commercial shipping, stating that Iranian infrastructure, including nuclear and civilian facilities, could become military targets if Tehran continued supporting attacks on maritime traffic. He further warned that Iran and the Houthis would face “major military punishment” should the assaults continue.

Analysts warn that sustained oil prices near or above $100 per barrel could complicate efforts by central banks to bring inflation under control.
