Iyabo Obasanjo Resigns from APC, Cites “Disrespect and Exclusion” in Ogun Politics

Former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party’s leadership in Ogun State of persistent disrespect, exclusion, and unfair treatment.

Obasanjo, a former senator for Ogun Central and ex-Commissioner for Health, said her decision followed disagreements over the APC’s consensus arrangement that produced Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, she argued that the process that led to Adeola’s emergence was not consistent with the party’s guidelines.

She said although she had agreed to support any consensus arrangement reached by the party, she was neither consulted nor included in the process before Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate.

Allegations of exclusion and intimidation

Obasanjo also alleged that some of her supporters were denied access to the venue where the candidate was unveiled and were intimidated.

Despite her grievances, she said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Adeola on the night of his emergence.

However, she said subsequent engagements with the senator did not yield results, claiming that promised feedback on requests made by her supporters was never delivered.

“When disrespect is the only dish served”

Describing her experience in the party, Obasanjo said she had endured repeated rejection and lack of recognition within the APC structure in Ogun State.

“The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table,” she said.

She added that she was leaving the APC “table where I am not welcomed.”

Appreciation to party leaders

Despite her resignation, the former lawmaker expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Ogun APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, and other party stakeholders for their support while she remained in the party.

Political comeback and governorship ambition

Obasanjo returned to active politics earlier in 2026 after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

She later declared her intention to contest the Ogun governorship election under the APC before the internal crisis over the consensus arrangement emerged.

Her exit marks a fresh political shift in Ogun State’s evolving 2027 governorship race, where party alignment and internal consensus processes are already generating tensions.
