New Zealand Introduces Six-Month Graduate Work Visa, Expands Post-Study Work Rights

Alongside the new visa category, New Zealand is broadening access to its Post Study Work Visa scheme.

New Zealand Work Visa

New Zealand has announced a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expanded eligibility for its Post Study Work Visa program which would favour international students.

The changes, which take effect on November 16, 2026, are aimed at helping international graduates transition into the workforce and address skill shortages across the country.

New Six-Month Graduate Work Visa

The newly introduced Short-term Graduate Work Visa is designed for students who complete eligible qualifications in New Zealand but do not meet the criteria for a Post Study Work Visa.

The visa grants six months of open work rights, allowing graduates to seek employment and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Complete a Level 5, Level 6, or Level 7 qualification in New Zealand.
  • Study full-time for at least 24 weeks.
  • Demonstrate access to at least NZD 5,000 for living expenses.
  • Apply within three months of their student visa expiring.

The visa will be issued only once and cannot be renewed or extended.

Restrictions

Although holders can work for employers across New Zealand, the visa comes with certain limitations. Recipients will not be permitted to:

  • Establish or operate a business.
  • Sponsor a partner for a work visa.
  • Sponsor dependent children for student visas.

Individuals who have previously held either a Post Study Work Visa or a Short-term Graduate Work Visa will not be eligible for the new pathway.

Expanded Post Study Work Visa Eligibility

Alongside the new visa category, New Zealand is broadening access to its Post Study Work Visa scheme.

Beginning November 16, 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma and already possess a bachelor’s degree obtained either in New Zealand or overseas will become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa.

Applicants will be required to complete the diploma on a full-time basis and provide evidence of their bachelor’s qualification, including academic transcripts.

The policy change is expected to benefit many international students who pursue graduate diplomas after completing undergraduate studies in their home countries.

Eligible graduate diploma holders will receive a Post Study Work Visa corresponding to the length of their studies in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.

However, the government has maintained its existing rule that individuals may receive only one Post Study Work Visa during their lifetime.

Alternative Route for Students Without Degrees

Graduate diploma holders who do not possess a bachelor’s degree may still qualify for a Post Study Work Visa if their qualification appears on New Zealand’s Green List and they secure employment in a related occupation.

Those whose qualifications are not linked to Green List occupations may instead utilize the new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa.

The reforms provide additional flexibility for international graduates seeking employment opportunities after completing their studies. The introduction of a dedicated six-month job-search visa offers a pathway for graduates who may not immediately qualify for longer-term post-study work options.

Education experts say the measures could strengthen New Zealand’s appeal as a study destination by providing graduates with more time to secure skilled employment and gain international work experience.
