Tinubu Announces New Homeland Security Adviser

Special Adviser on Homeland Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka A. Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security framework and intelligence coordination.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday.

According to the statement, signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam, the appointment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving national security operations, intelligence sharing, and inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging security threats across the country.

The statement noted that Major General Fadewa brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience to the role, with expertise spanning counter-terrorism operations, intelligence fusion, national security strategy, and international security diplomacy.

Key Role in Nigeria’s Intelligence Coordination

Fadewa previously served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) between 2015 and 2021.

During his time at ONSA, he reportedly led efforts to establish the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC), a multi-agency intelligence platform designed to improve coordination among major security and intelligence agencies including the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces.

Government officials say the initiative helped improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination across security institutions.

Security Reform and Research Contributions

Following his retirement from active military service, Fadewa worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, where he focused on policing reforms, civil-security cooperation, and national security policy development.

He is also credited with authoring the monograph titled “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which examines practical approaches to strengthening collaboration between civil authorities and security institutions.
