Former Sokoto governor and senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deepening internal crises and widening divisions within the opposition party.
Tambuwal announced his defection on Thursday in a statement personally signed by him, saying the decision followed extensive consultations with political allies, supporters and key stakeholders.
“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” the statement read.
PDP Internal Crisis
The lawmaker said the lingering internal challenges within the PDP had significantly weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.
Tambuwal, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria between 2011 and 2015, acknowledged the role the PDP played in shaping his political career, noting that the party provided the platform through which he served Nigeria in several key capacities.
“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it gave me to serve our nation, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as Governor of Sokoto State,” he said.
However, he stressed that prolonged leadership tussles and internal wrangling within the party had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain.
“However, the persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party. These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision,” he added.
Following his resignation, Tambuwal announced that he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside many of his associates and supporters.
Tambuwal explained that his decision to align with the ADC was driven by his conviction that Nigeria requires a stronger and more credible political platform capable of addressing the country’s economic and governance challenges.
