Adetola Muyiwa John was recently confirmed as the Accountant-General/State Auditor-General of Lagos State Government by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

His appointment was announced in a statement by the state Government on Tuesday, which read ‘’ The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has approved the deployment of Mr. Adetola, Muyiwa John, as the new Accountant-General of the State and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury Office (STO).

‘’The redeployment follows the statutory retirement of the outgoing Accountant-General/Permanent Secretary, Dr Abiodun Muritala.

‘’According to an official circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service, the Governor approved the redeployment of Mr. Adetola from the Office of the State Auditor-General, where he previously served as the State Auditor-General. The redeployment, according to the circular, takes immediate effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.’’

Education

Mr. Adetola Muyiwa John is a seasoned public sector accountant and audit professional within the Lagos State Civil Service who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Olabisi Onabanjo University (formerly Ogun State University) and a Master of Business Administration (with concentration in Finance Management) from Lagos State University, Ojo.

Professionally, he is a fellow and qualified member of major professional accounting and audit bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), where he is an FCA (Fellow Chartered Accountant; indicating senior status), the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) as a Fellow (FCTI), and the International Academy of Forensics (IAF). He is also a Certified Forensic Accountant, a qualification that signals expertise in investigative audit and financial forensics.

Public Service Career

Before his elevation to the top office, Mr. John served as Head of the Directorate of Performance Audit in the Office of the State Auditor-General, a role that involved reviewing government operations for efficiency, compliance and effective use of public resources. His leadership there was cited as one of the reasons for his appointment by the Lagos State Governor.

His formal appointment as Acting State Auditor-General began on February 14, 2024, when the Lagos State Governor approved his nomination, acknowledging his track record and professionalism in audit and public service.

In late 2024, Mr. John was confirmed by the Lagos State House of Assembly as the substantive State Auditor-General, following screening by the legislature. \

During his tenure, he has led initiatives to strengthen ethical conduct and professional capacity within the state’s audit function. In mid-2025, he personally opened a training workshop on “Ethical Behaviour and Performance Improvement” aimed at junior public service staff, stressing continuous learning and integrity in the civil service.
