2025 National Grid Collapse
Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered a major collapse in 2025, resulting in widespread power outages across the country and disrupting homes, businesses, and critical services. The most severe incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when electricity generation plunged dramatically within hours, forcing a nationwide blackout. Power distribution companies confirmed loss of supply across multiple states as the grid shut down, marking one of the most significant power failures of the year.
The December incident was the second grid collapse recorded in 2025, following an earlier system disturbance in March that also triggered extensive outages. Industry experts attributed the repeated failures to longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, including weak transmission infrastructure, gas supply disruptions to power plants, and operational constraints within the grid.
