The Modakeke community in Osun State has appealed to the state government to urgently rehabilitate major and inner roads within the town, citing worsening hardship for residents and declining social and economic activity due to their poor condition.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday ahead of the 40th Akoraye Day celebration, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Prince Tunmbi Toriola, said several link roads that connect different neighbourhoods in the town had deteriorated severely, disrupting movement, commerce, and public services.
Toriola noted that the community was preparing to raise N1 billion during the grand finale of this year’s Akoraye Day festivities to execute key development projects and bridge infrastructure gaps that have lingered for years.
He stressed that while Modakeke residents have a strong tradition of self-driven development, government support remains crucial to achieving long-term progress.
“Modakeke has always shown commitment to self-help initiatives, but communities thrive when government collaboration strengthens local efforts,” he said.
“We are calling on the Osun State Government to take decisive action on failed roads, inadequate drainage, poor access routes, obsolete water systems, insufficient health facilities, and the need for improved security infrastructure.”
Highlighting specific areas requiring urgent attention, Toriola mentioned the bridge at the Old NEPA area, which he said remains abandoned despite being near completion.
He emphasized that improved road networks would enhance commercial activity, mobility, emergency response operations, and general well-being of residents.
Reflecting on past developments financed through communal contributions, Toriola listed several completed projects including Modakeke High School, an ultramodern palace, a police station, post office and staff quarters, and various court buildings.
He said these successes demonstrate the town’s capacity to deliver impactful projects when properly supported.
The grand finale of the week-long Akoraye Day celebration is expected to attract dignitaries, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade.
Toriola assured that adequate security and logistical arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth event.
He also called on residents to remain peaceful and supportive of ongoing development efforts, reaffirming Modakeke’s commitment to harmonious coexistence with neighbouring communities.
The Modakeke community had earlier, in October 2024, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for intervention following repeated attacks by suspected hoodlums, which heightened tension within the town.
The Modakeke Progressive Union, led by Prof. Peter Olawuni, raised the alarm after a town entrance signpost was vandalised.
As preparations intensify for this year’s Akoraye Day, the community says its priority remains infrastructure renewal, enhanced security, and sustained development partnerships with government authorities.
