Nigeria’s Broader Digital Skills Agenda
Since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began, Nigeria has prioritized digital and technical skills development, with AI as a key focus. The N120 billion youth skills acquisition programme funds companies to train 60,000 youths in three months, providing job-ready skills and starter packs.
Additionally, the government launched a free AI Academy in December 2024, in partnership with Intel and the Commonwealth Secretariat. This academy offers self-paced AI courses, internships, and ambassador roles to bolster Nigeria’s AI ecosystem.
Strategic Partnerships for Digital Transformation
The Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) has partnered with the U.S.-based SBTS Group to establish Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) hubs, starting in Enugu and Kano. Supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), this collaboration addresses the projected need for 230 million digitally skilled jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
These initiatives reflect Nigeria’s strategic vision to harness AI and digital technologies for economic growth. The Gen AI Fellowship Programme is a critical step toward building a globally competitive tech workforce.
