Young Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal has been withdrawn from Spain’s national team for the final two 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey this November.
Despite shining brightly in his recent club outings, scoring in each of Barcelona’s last three games—including a key goal in their 4-2 La Liga triumph over Celta Vigo—Yamal’s international duties have been cut short.
The 18-year-old winger had earned a spot in the squad thanks to his strong form, but ongoing issues with a pubalgia (groin) injury have forced his removal.
Barcelona reportedly notified the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) late about a radio-frequency procedure performed on Yamal the same day national team training began, advising 7-10 days of rest for recovery.
Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his astonishment at the sudden turn of events, noting, “I’m shocked, I’ve never been through a situation like this before, and I don’t think it’s normal at all.”
He highlighted the lack of prior information, emphasizing how the team was caught off guard. The RFEF voiced “surprise and concern” over the procedure and communication delay, prioritizing the player’s health by releasing him immediately.
This development comes as Spain aims to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup with potential wins in these matches. Yamal is now back with Barcelona for rehabilitation and is anticipated to return to full fitness by the end of the international break.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between club and country commitments, especially for young talents like Yamal, who has been dealing with this injury recurrence since last month.
