Police Detain 12 in Robbery Case Involving Sommie Maduagwu

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended 12 individuals believed to be part of a well-known criminal syndicate.

These suspects are accused of carrying out the attack that resulted in the deaths of ARISE News employee Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, and security guard Barnabas Danlami.

The incident occurred at Unique Apartments in Gishiri Village, located in the Katampe District of Abuja. During the robbery, which took place in the early hours of September 29, 2025, the robbers stormed the building, leading to the tragic fatalities.

Reports indicate that Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor, attempted to escape by jumping from the third floor of her apartment, resulting in fatal injuries. The security guard, Barnabas Danlami, was also killed during the assault.

Authorities recovered several items from the suspects, including weapons and mobile phones, which are believed to be linked to the crime and possibly other robberies.

The arrests mark a step forward in addressing the security concerns in the area, with the police continuing their investigations into the gang’s activities.

Maduagwu was remembered by her colleagues at ARISE News as a cherished and talented journalist whose untimely death has sparked outrage and calls for improved safety measures in the capital.

The FCT Police have not yet released further details on the suspects’ identities or potential charges, but the case highlights ongoing efforts to combat armed robbery in urban centers.
