Lagos, Nigeria’s vibrant economic hub, is set to make history by hosting the first-ever E1 Electric Powerboat Championship in Africa from October 3 to 5, 2025, on Victoria Island.
This landmark event, a collaboration between the E1 Series organizers and the Lagos State Government, will bring together over 250 sports personalities, including teams backed by global icons like Didier Drogba and Will Smith, to compete in the world’s only all-electric powerboat racing series.
The E1 Lagos GP is more than a sporting spectacle; it represents Lagos’ bold commitment to clean energy, sustainability, and innovation in marine transportation.
By hosting this event, Lagos joins elite global cities such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah, cementing its place in international conversations on environmental responsibility and economic growth.
The championship is expected to spotlight Lagos as a thriving hub of culture, commerce, and creativity, while promoting tourism, investment, and water-based transportation.
A Platform for Innovation and Sustainability
At a press conference, Rodi Basso, CEO of the E1 Series, emphasized the significance of the event in showcasing advancements in the marine industry. “The ocean presents one of nature’s toughest challenges, and the boating industry is undergoing transformative changes to meet those demands,” Basso said.
“The E1 Series highlights cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, using alternative power sources and innovative designs to reduce environmental impact in even the most demanding conditions.”
Basso noted that Lagos outcompeted other global cities to secure hosting rights, a move that will open doors for further investment in sports and entertainment.
He assured stakeholders that the technology-driven championship would be sustained through ongoing partnerships with the Lagos State Government.
A Showcase of Lagos’ Potential
Sam Egube, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the event as a defining moment for Lagos.
“This championship is proof of Lagos’ capacity to host world-class events that blend speed, sustainability, and innovation,” Egube said.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase our cultural heritage, welcome tourists and investors, and position Lagos as a global leader in the blue economy.”
Egube highlighted that the event aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES + developmental agenda, which prioritizes sustainable energy, economic growth, and global prestige.
“Lagos is racing for the future—not just for Africa, but for the world,” he added.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The E1 Lagos GP is poised to deliver significant economic benefits. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture and a member of the LOC, expressed optimism about the influx of tourists, which is expected to boost the local economy.
She urged artisans, traders, fishermen, and hospitality industry stakeholders to seize this opportunity for economic growth, emphasizing the event’s potential to drive development across Lagos and Nigeria.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation and LOC member, underscored the untapped potential of Lagos’ waterways.
He noted that the championship would encourage the adoption of alternative water transportation, reducing road congestion.
Osiyemi also highlighted the Omi Eko project, which will introduce 72 electric boats to Lagos’ waterways, further advancing sustainable transport solutions.
A Vision for Lagos’ Future
Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Media and Publicity, delivered a vote of thanks at the press conference, reaffirming Lagos’ readiness to host events that enhance its global profile and economic output.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu is passionate about building a Lagos that thrives today and tomorrow,” Akosile said.
“The E1 Championship will generate revenue, increase our GDP, and showcase Lagos as the investment capital of Africa.”
Veteran sports journalists at the event praised the Lagos State Government for its forward-thinking initiative, noting that the E1 Lagos GP will elevate Nigeria’s standing on the global sporting map.
