Match Report

Ipswich Town script history as they defeated Tottenham Hotspurs after a poor display by the hosts. The home side had the better team but they never really played their best as the visitors took the initiative.

Ipswich put in a lot of effort to secure their first win of the season. They deservedly got their first breakthrough when Cajuste crossed in a delivery that was attacked by Delap. He tried to create a goal but it looped to Szmodics who adjusted brilliantly with his back to goal to steer a controlled overhead kick into the corner. It was a spectacular goal to give the visiting team and fans a sense of belief.

The momentum led to Ipswich making it 2-0 going into the break. The second goal was made in a counter as Szmodics sprinted down the line and passed a low ball that Dragusin almost put past his own goalkeeper. It fortunately rebounded before Delap who struck home on the goal-line. The Tractor Boys and their fans were overjoyed going into the break as Spurs looked in disarray.

The second half began with Tottenham looking to make amends as they pushed for a comeback. Dominic Solanke looked like he managed it when he scored in the 52nd minute but his efforts were canceled by the VAR for a handball. Bentancur provided the much-needed breakthrough for Tottenham when he headed a corner from Porro making the scoreline 1-2. The final 20 minutes of the game saw Spurs push hard for an equaliser which unfortunately never materialised.

Ipswich won their first premier league game of the season. It was also their first win since April 2002 in the top league.

Kieran Mckenna’s team played with tenacity and doggedness to deny Spurs a draw. They very much deserved the win today as they moved out of the relegation zone to go 17th in the Premier League standings. Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham will be very disappointed with their underwhelming performance as they continue their up-and-down form this season. Spurs are now 10th in the standings and are in danger of slipping into the bottom half of the table.
