History of Match Bonus Dispute
There super Eagles refused to participate in their 2026 world cup playoffs game against DR Congo a in November after they were denied payments of their match bonuses with the issue later resolved by President Tinubu.
After finishing as runners-up at AFCON 2023, Super Eagles players raised concerns over the timing and structure of match bonuses, particularly appearance fees and promised incentives.
At AFCON 2021, the Nigerian government announced that players would receive a single consolidated tournament bonus, replacing the traditional match-by-match bonus system. Players objected, insisting that their contracts and precedent entitled them to per-match payments.
Players reportedly threatened to boycott the Round of 16 match vs Tunisia before emergency meetings were held between team leaders, NFF officials and government representatives to resolve the issue.
