Senegalese Parliament Speaker Resigns Paving Way For Dismissed Sonko’s Return to Parliament

Some critics say reinstating Sonko would be illegal as he has never been a member of parliament.

Senegal’s parliament speaker, El Malick Ndiaye, has announced his resignation, deepening political turmoil in the West African ‌nation two days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed the government led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Ndiaye, a senior figure in the ruling PASTEF party, said on Sunday his resignation was a personal decision, giving the “higher interest of the nation” as a reason for his departure.

Recent Leadership Crisis

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Friday and dissolved the government after months of mounting tension between the two leaders.

The fallout marks the most serious rupture within the ruling PASTEF movement since it came to power in 2024. Sonko, the party’s founder and most influential political figure, had increasingly criticized Faye’s leadership style and handling of Senegal’s worsening economic situation, particularly negotiations linked to the IMF and the country’s mounting debt burden.

The crisis was triggered by a severe debt crisis after audits uncovered previously hidden liabilities and underreported public debt, disagreements over IMF-backed reforms, including possible debt restructuring and fuel subsidy cuts, Internal power struggles within the ruling coalition over political appointments and party control and growing public frustration over delayed reforms and economic hardship.

Senegal’s parliamentary speaker, El Malick Ndiaye, resigned shortly after Sonko’s dismissal, potentially opening the way for Sonko to seek the powerful position of parliament speaker, where PASTEF still holds a majority.

Members of parliament are set to convene on Tuesday to vote on reinstating Sonko as a lawmaker and to elect a new speaker for the National Assembly to replace Ndiaye.
