Profile: Sterling Financial Holdings Appoints Olubisi Makoju, Olayinka Oni to Board

Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc has announced the appointment of seasoned finance executive Olubisi Makoju as an Independent Non-Executive Director of the holding company and technology and digital banking executive Olayinka Oni as a Non-Executive Director of Sterling Bank Limited.

Olubisi Makoju Profile

Makoju joins the board with more than 25 years of experience across the oil and gas, consulting, information technology and financial services sectors. Her career has been defined by leadership in financial management, corporate strategy, operational excellence and organisational transformation.

She currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of Smart Grid Development Limited and is the founder of Earthwise Capital Limited. Before assuming her current role, she was Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), where she led key strategic and corporate initiatives while overseeing multidisciplinary teams.

Makoju holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Warwick. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), United Kingdom. She has also completed several executive leadership and professional development programmes.

Olayinka Oni Profile

The company also announced the appointment of Olayinka Oni as a Non-Executive Director of Sterling Bank Limited. Oni currently serves as an Executive Director of Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, having previously led Sterling Bank’s digital transformation agenda as Chief Digital Officer.

Before joining the Sterling Group, Oni was Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Nigeria, where he was responsible for technology strategy and strategic stakeholder engagement. He also served as Chief Information Officer and General Manager, Information Technology and Operations, at Wema Bank Plc, and earlier worked as an Experienced Manager with Accenture’s Nigerian practice.

Oni was a co-convener of CIO Nexus, a forum bringing together Chief Information Officers across the country to advance technology leadership and collaboration.

A graduate of Agricultural Economics from the University of Ilorin, Oni holds a Master’s degree in Management from McGill University, Canada, and is an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (HCIB). His professional expertise spans solutions engineering, programme management, enterprise architecture and information technology governance.

He has also attended executive education programmes at leading global institutions, including Harvard University, Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, INSEAD and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with a focus on business strategy, financial management, digital transformation and executive leadership.
