NYSC Commences Payment of 77k Allowance

NYSC Corpers Receive 77k Allowance

The Federal Government of Nigeria has finally begun disbursing the increased monthly allowance of N77,000 to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, ending months of frustration following a delayed rollout. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the pay hike in September 2024, raising hopes among corps members nationwide. However, for nearly six months, they continued receiving the previous N33,000 stipend, a rate set in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Favour, a corps member serving in Lagos State, confirmed to Arbiterz that the NYSC has started paying the new N77,000 allowance. She noted that the disbursement is occurring in batches, with some corps members already receiving the updated amount while others remain in anticipation. This staggered approach has left many still awaiting their payments, though the process is now underway.

The delay had sparked widespread discontent, but the eventual implementation has shifted the narrative. Nigerians have taken to social media to express a mix of relief, gratitude, and reflection. Twitter user @ToluDaniel10

wrote, “NYSC is finally paying 77k to corps members . If you have this girl’s DM, go say a big thank you. I bet the government wouldn’t have listened to you if not for her,” hinting at the influence of public or individual advocacy in pushing the government to act.

Meanwhile, @fimlex2 pointed out the change in tone online, tweeting, “NYSC don pay corpers 77k now, see as everywhere just quiet,” contrasting the silence now with the vocal complaints during the delay. @jess_odii offered a straightforward confirmation: “NYSC has finally started the 77k payment today.” For @dreyymo, the news was cause for celebration, as they shared, “NYSC don pay 77k oooo I feel good ,” complete with enthusiastic emojis.

This allowance increase aligns with broader minimum wage adjustments championed by labor unions and the government, reflecting a commitment to improving financial support for NYSC members. The Minister of Youths had earlier assured corps members that the federal government would clear the backlog of the N77,000 allowance, a pledge now being fulfilled with these payments.

The development marks a significant relief for NYSC participants, who contribute to national development through mandatory service in sectors like education, healthcare, and community development across Nigeria. While the batch payment process means some are still waiting, the commencement of disbursements signals progress in addressing their long-standing financial concerns.
