The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has called on the government of South Africa to take urgent action to protect Nigerians and other African migrants amid growing reports of xenophobic violence, harassment, and intimidation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed concern that tensions were escalating despite previous diplomatic efforts between Nigeria and South Africa aimed at easing hostilities.
She noted that expectations of improved relations following earlier engagements had not materialised, with conditions on the ground reportedly worsening.
Rising Fear Among Nigerian Communities
According to the commission, disturbing reports indicate that many Nigerians living in South Africa are increasingly living in fear.
Children of Nigerian descent are said to be avoiding school, while business owners are shutting down operations due to threats of looting and targeted attacks.
Community leaders have also documented fresh incidents of violence within the past 72 hours, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.
NiDCOM stressed that South African authorities have a responsibility under international law and African Union frameworks to ensure the protection of all residents, regardless of nationality.
Call Against Profiling and Collective Punishment
The commission strongly rejected the profiling of Nigerians, warning against generalisations that associate criminal activity with an entire nationality.
It emphasised that crime should be treated as an individual matter, stating that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing should face due process under South African law, irrespective of their origin.
NiDCOM described blanket stereotyping and collective punishment as dangerous and unacceptable, urging authorities to take decisive steps to curb such practices.
Key Demands and Safety Measures
Among its recommendations, the commission called for:
- Increased security presence in affected communities
- Swift prosecution of perpetrators
- Creation of a joint Nigeria–South Africa community safety forum
It also urged South African officials to publicly condemn xenophobia and promote messages of unity and non-discrimination.
At the same time, Nigerians residing in South Africa were advised to remain law-abiding, stay vigilant, and avoid high-risk areas, especially at night.
Diplomatic Engagement Ongoing
NiDCOM confirmed that it is working closely with Nigeria’s diplomatic missions, including the High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate in Johannesburg, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to monitor developments and support affected citizens.
The commission acknowledged that many South Africans continue to maintain peaceful and respectful relationships with Nigerians, highlighting the long-standing historical ties between both nations.
Background to the Crisis
The renewed tensions have been linked to activities by the anti-immigration group Operation Dudula, which has been accused of targeting African migrants and calling for mass deportations.
Recent unrest has heightened diplomatic concerns, especially following reports of attacks and killings involving Nigerians in cities such as Durban and Cape Town.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously urged foreign nationals to respect the country’s laws while reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to human rights.
Nigeria Pushes for Urgent Action
As tensions continue to rise, Nigeria is intensifying diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.
NiDCOM insists that immediate and concrete measures are necessary to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of Nigerians and other migrants across affected communities.
