Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, widely known as Tafa Sego, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday night. According to reports from The Nation Newspaper, six armed men stormed his residence at Gbadamosi Close, Surulere, around 11 p.m., with the apparent intent to kill him. Fortunately, Tafa Sego was not at home during the attack, having left earlier to attend an event with associates.
The assailants, upon arriving at the residence, encountered only the security guard. It was reported that the armed men tied up the guard before ransacking the house in a desperate search for the union leader. Finding the premises empty of their target, they fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of fear and uncertainty.
The invasion has rattled the Surulere neighborhood, with residents expressing alarm over the audacity of the attack and concerns about potential future incidents.
Police officers from the Area C Command swiftly responded, visiting the residence to assess the situation and document the damages. Vanguard News noted that the security guard, who was interrogated by the police, provided key details that may aid the ongoing investigation. Authorities have since launched a probe to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, though no arrests have been reported as of Monday, April 7, 2025.
A close associate of Tafa Sego revealed that the union leader is deeply troubled by the attempt on his life. The incident comes at a time when Tafa Sego, who was sworn in as Lagos NURTW Chairman in November 2024, is working to implement policies aimed at enhancing the welfare of union members.
His leadership has followed a period of internal tensions within the NURTW, notably after his predecessor, Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), transitioned to the union’s national presidency. The associate emphasized Tafa Sego’s commitment to cooperating fully with security agencies to ensure justice is served.
The attack has heightened concerns about the safety of union leaders in Lagos, a city where the NURTW plays a significant role in the transportation sector. Residents and union members alike are calling for increased security measures to prevent such incidents. As investigations continue, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to release an official statement.
