‘Fool at 40! I’m bigger than Fela’ — Wizkid fires back at Seun Kuti

How a simmering online clash between Wizkid FC and Seun Kuti spiralled into a generational showdown over fame, legacy, and who defines greatness in Nigerian music

What began as a simmering argument between rival fanbases exploded into a full-blown cultural confrontation on Tuesday night after Wizkid launched a scathing online attack on Seun Kuti, triggering an avalanche of reactions across Nigerian social media.

The dispute had been building for days, driven largely by a growing online fracas between Seun Kuti and Wizkid’s fanbase, Wizkid FC. Seun, 43, accused the fanbase of disrespecting the legacy of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, by repeatedly comparing the Afrobeat pioneer to Wizkid, whose career has been defined by global chart success and mainstream acclaim.

“To compare Fela to pop stars because of streams and awards is ignorance,” Seun said in one widely shared clip earlier in the week, arguing that his father’s cultural and political impact could not be measured by modern metrics of fame.

Those comments immediately drew backlash. Wizkid FC flooded X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok with rebuttals, accusing Seun of bitterness and gatekeeping. “Nobody is erasing Fela,” one fan wrote. “But times change. Wizkid is the reason Gen Z even goes back to listen.”

Another fan was blunter: “Seun survives on his father’s name. Wizkid built his own empire.”

By Tuesday evening, Wizkid himself stepped in. He reposted a viral Yoruba-language video in which a woman harshly criticised Seun’s recent online conduct, accusing him of days of erratic posting and excessive insults.

“If not for Wizkid, do you think young people would still care about your father?” the woman asked in the clip. “Is it only weed and trousers you inherited?”

Minutes later, Wizkid abandoned all restraint. In a series of Instagram Story posts, he directly insulted Seun and made the remark that would ignite nationwide outrage.

“Ok I big pass your papa!!! Fool at 40!” he wrote.

In another post, he added: “I’m Big Wiz everyday, bigger than your papa. Wetin you wan do?”

The reaction was immediate and deeply polarised.

Supporters of Wizkid praised his refusal to “bow to sacred cows.” One fan tweeted: “People keep acting like Fela is untouchable. Wizkid is the biggest African artist ever. Facts are facts.” Another wrote: “Seun started this. You don’t poke Wizkid and expect silence.”

But critics were far louder. Many accused the singer of crossing a cultural red line. “There are things you don’t say in Nigerian music,” one commentator wrote. “Streams don’t make you bigger than Fela.”

A prominent music journalist posted: “Wizkid is a global superstar, yes. But Fela is an institution. One is fame. The other is history.”

Even neutral observers expressed discomfort with how quickly fan wars had escalated into personal and generational abuse. “This is what stan culture does,” a user noted. “It turns legitimate debate into disrespect.”

As of Tuesday night, Seun Kuti had not formally responded to Wizkid’s comments, though fans expect a reaction. What is clear is that the episode has reopened long-standing tensions between Afrobeat traditionalists and the modern Afrobeats movement—between cultural legacy and commercial dominance, and between reverence for history and the impatience of a new generation eager to crown its own icons.

In Nigeria’s music ecosystem, few debates are more explosive—and few names more powerful—than Fela and Wizkid. This clash has shown just how combustible that intersection can be.
