The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a ban on commercial motorcycles (okadas) and tricycles (keke) on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, with the restriction taking effect this week.
The directive was disclosed on Sunday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, who said the measure is aimed at protecting the newly constructed superhighway from misuse and premature deterioration.
According to Dare, the restriction is intended to preserve the road’s integrity, ensure its long-term sustainability, and maintain safety for all road users.
In addition to the ban on motorcycles and tricycles, the ministry also prohibited the indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles on the coastal highway and all bridges across Lagos State.
The ministry further warned against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable.
Dare said road signs indicating the new restrictions have already been installed, while task force officials will be stationed at strategic locations to enforce compliance.
He warned that violators would face strict enforcement measures, describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure that requires proper maintenance and protection.
The Federal Controller urged motorists and other road users to comply with the directives in the interest of public safety, noting that preserving the facility would enhance its lifespan and ensure Nigerians continue to benefit from the investment.
