End of an era: Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager after disappointing Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager, two days after their heart-wrenching loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Prince William described Southgate as an “all-round class act” in a heartfelt tribute.

A New Chapter Begins

In a statement, Southgate announced, “It’s time for change and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Royal Tribute

Prince William, who attended the 2-1 defeat in his role as Football Association president, praised Southgate on social media, stating, “Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny. And thank you for being an all-round class act. You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. W.”

Potential Successors

Speculation about Southgate’s successor has already begun, with names like Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and former Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino being mentioned, according to AFP.

Southgate’s Legacy

Southgate, a former international defender, took over the England team in 2016 during a tumultuous period. England had just exited the Euros after a shocking defeat to Iceland, and Roy Hodgson’s successor, Sam Allardyce, resigned amid scandal.

Southgate brought stability and success, guiding England to three semi-finals and two consecutive European Championship finals.

Historic Achievements

Before his tenure, England had reached only three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their history, winning the 1966 World Cup.

Despite his efforts, Southgate was unable to secure a trophy, with England losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final and falling to Spain in this year’s final.

Praise from the FA

FA CEO Mark Bullingham praised Southgate’s contributions, stating, “Gareth has made the impossible job possible and laid strong foundations for future success. We came so close to winning the Euros in London and securing the first trophy for our men’s team for over 50 years – and came so close again in Berlin on Sunday.”

Southgate’s Reflections

Southgate expressed his pride in his role, saying, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.”

Challenges at Euro 2024

Although England was one of the pre-tournament favourites, they showcased resilience rather than skill in reaching the Euro 2024 final. Southgate admitted that the criticism, including fans throwing beer cups at him after a 0-0 draw with Slovenia in the group stage, had taken its toll.

A Promising Future

Despite the challenges, Southgate leaves behind a squad brimming with young talent. Players like Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Declan Rice will be in their prime for the 2026 World Cup.

Pride in the Team

“The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent, and they can win the trophy we all dream of,” Southgate said. “I am so proud of them.”

Impressive Record

Southgate’s overall record as England manager includes 61 wins, 24 draws, and 17 defeats in 102 matches. He ranks third in all-time victories and is one of only three managers to have led England in over 100 matches.

Key Players During His Tenure

Four key players from the Euro 2024 final, including captain Harry Kane, who was capped 81 times under Southgate, along with Kyle Walker, Jordan Pickford, and John Stones, formed the backbone of his team throughout his tenure.

Future Plans for England

FA CEO Bullingham stated that the process for appointing Southgate’s successor is underway, with an interim solution in place if needed. England’s next match is against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.

“The process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now underway, and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible,” Bullingham said. “Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September, and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed.”
