A nursing student in Agbor, Delta State, faces expulsion for recording, singing, and sharing an “unofficial response” to a song honoring Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, during her visit to the school.
At the event, students were instructed to chant “Na our mama be this” (meaning “This is our mother”) as part of a tribute. Instead, they chanted “Na your mama be this” (“This is your mother”), rejecting the notion of recognizing her as “mummy.”
Following this, the school authorities launched an inquiry into the students’ actions. An official letter singled out Student Nurse Osato Edobor for posting the altered chant on TikTok, amplifying the incident that sparked widespread attention after a viral X post.
The letter, which has been widely shared online, states:
“It has come to the notice of the school authority that you, Student Nurse Osato Edobor, on March 25, 2025, during the official visit of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, at the Dome Event Center, Asaba, for the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribution of 10,000 Professional Kits (Crocs and Scrubs) to Midwives across Nigeria’s South-South Zone, engaged in a malicious act of recording, singing, and posting an unofficial response to a song during the First Lady’s arrival (as found on your TikTok page).”
“This is a punishable offence as outlined in the Student Handbook under standardized disciplinary actions for certain offences (No. 8, Page 21).”
“You are, therefore, required to provide a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours of receiving this letter, stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against you.”
As the news spread online, concerned individuals flooded the comment section, sharing their opinions on the matter.
@Haso_0012: “First of all, the song they’re talking about ain’t even an official song, secondly, first lady wasn’t even in the video she posted & even if she was in the video, how’s that an offense? What’s wrong in saying the first lady ain’t my mother?… That country is one big circus…!”
