Dangote’s new product could save Nigeria $267m annually – MAN

Dangote’s Polypropylene Production: A Game-Changer for Nigeria’s Economy and Textile Industry

Dangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price to ₦835/Litre

Nigeria’s manufacturing landscape is set for a major transformation with Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals launching polypropylene production. This initiative, driven by the industrial powerhouse Dangote Group, has ignited optimism among manufacturers, particularly within the textile sector.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) highlights that this development could slash import costs by $267 million annually, signaling a transformative step toward economic self-reliance and industrial revival.

Economic Impact of Local Polypropylene Production

The introduction of locally produced polypropylene promises substantial economic benefits for Nigeria. By cutting dependence on imported raw materials, the country stands to save $267 million each year, a figure projected by Dangote Industries Chairman Aliko Dangote.

This cost reduction is just the beginning. Experts anticipate a ripple effect, including boosted industrial growth, job creation, and heightened competitiveness in the textile industry.

As a key material across multiple sectors, locally available polypropylene could drive broader economic progress and reduce Nigeria’s vulnerability to foreign exchange fluctuations.

Reviving Nigeria’s Textile Industry

Once a thriving hub employing over 25,000 workers in the northern region, Nigeria’s textile industry has been battered by challenges. MAN Director-General Segun Kadir-Ajayi points to the absence of local polypropylene production and scarce foreign exchange as primary culprits behind the sector’s decline, forcing numerous firms to close.

Dangote’s new product offers a lifeline, providing a steady supply of this critical material. With reduced costs and improved access, textile manufacturers could ramp up production, potentially restoring the industry’s former glory and re-employing thousands.

Dangote’s Polypropylene Production

In October 2024, Dangote Industries kicked off polypropylene production at its refinery, a strategic move to curb Nigeria’s reliance on imported materials. Used widely in packaging, textiles, and automotive parts, polypropylene is essential to modern manufacturing.

Aliko Dangote forecasts that, at full capacity, the refinery will satisfy all local demand, erasing the need for $267.7 million in annual imports. This ambitious step not only underscores Dangote’s commitment to Nigeria’s industrial future but also positions the nation as a potential polypropylene production leader in the region.

Polypropylene Powering Multiple Industries

Polypropylene, a durable, lightweight, and chemically resistant thermoplastic, is a cornerstone of numerous industries. In packaging, it shapes plastic containers and food packaging films.

The textile sector uses it for non-woven fabrics and carpets, while automakers leverage its lightweight nature for bumpers and dashboards. Healthcare relies on it for sterile syringes and vials, construction for insulation, and electronics for cables and battery cases.

Its role extends to agriculture in irrigation pipes and consumer goods in everyday items. Local production of this versatile material is a game-changer, fueling Nigeria’s industrial ambitions and cutting import reliance.
