President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has announced the opening of applications for the National Health Fellows Programme. A strategic initiative aimed at young Nigerians aged 25 to 35 to revolutionize the health sector. This program is a significant step towards enhancing healthcare delivery by deploying fellows across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria. It’s part of a comprehensive plan to upgrade existing primary healthcare centers and construct over 8,800 new ones, ensuring accessible and quality healthcare throughout the nation. Spearheaded by President Tinubu, the program falls under the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office, emphasizing a coordinated effort to improve health services.
Eligibility and Commitment
Eligibility for the National Health Fellow Program is quite specific. Applicants must be between 25 and 35 years old and hold a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, IT, or social sciences. A strong interest or previous experience in public health, health-related NGOs, or community projects that demonstrate leadership and initiative is crucial. Importantly, the program demands a full-time commitment, meaning applicants cannot be currently employed on a full-time or part-time basis. This is to ensure that the fellows can fully dedicate themselves to the transformative work ahead. Preference is given to those who reside in the local government area they are applying for, although applications from indigenes living elsewhere are also considered.
Candidates are expected to possess smartphones with data capabilities for communication tools like WhatsApp and Zoom, underscoring the modern approach to health sector management and communication. They must also secure a recommendation from either their University Dean, NYSC place of primary assignment, or a respected organization, highlighting their character and leadership qualities. Analytical skills, entrepreneurial drive, and leadership are highly valued traits in applicants.
