Lagos Announces Independence Bridge Diversion for Weekend Repairs

Motorists using Independence Bridge should expect possible delays as repair crews work on the affected sections.

Lagos Independence Bridge closure

The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent asphalt repairs scheduled for October 16 to 18, 2026.

The repairs will commence on Friday night and continue through Saturday and Sunday, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun, said traffic management measures would be implemented to minimise disruption during the repair works.

“The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the public that traffic will be diverted on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works commences urgent repairs of the bridge,” the statement said.

The government explained that the repairs would involve the partial closure of sections of the bridge, with one lane remaining open at a time to allow motorists to continue their journeys.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy officers around the affected sections of the bridge to manage traffic and minimise delays throughout the repair period.

Repair Schedule and Traffic Advisory

The repair exercise is scheduled to run from Friday night, October 16, through Sunday, October 18. Motorists using Independence Bridge should expect possible delays as repair crews work on the affected sections.

The government said the partial-closure arrangement would allow work to proceed while maintaining limited access for motorists.

Road users have been advised to monitor traffic conditions and follow official diversion instructions throughout the exercise.

The Federal Ministry of Works is undertaking the repairs, while the Lagos State Government and LASTMA will coordinate traffic management around the bridge.
