Egypt’s national football coach Hossam Hassan was reportedly caught in a family confrontation at a hotel on the country’s North Coast, turning a dispute that had been playing out publicly for months into a physical altercation that drew police intervention.
The incident, reported by Egyptian media on Aug. 16, took place at a café in the Marina resort area after Hassan and his current wife, Dan Adam, returned from a performance by Egyptian singer Mohamed Ramadan. Accounts of what happened differ, and there is no independently verified account establishing which party initiated the confrontation.
According to Dan Adam’s account, members of Hassan’s former wife Howayda El-Gharbawy’s family approached the couple at the café and attempted to pull Hassan from his chair. The confrontation then escalated between the two sides.

Dan said she was struck, had her hair pulled and was hit with hot coffee during the incident. Those allegations have not been independently verified.
A family dispute that had already become public
The confrontation did not emerge in isolation.
Hassan’s private life had already become a subject of Egyptian media attention during the summer after El-Gharbawy appeared on television and discussed her long relationship with the coach and their children.
El-Gharbawy and Hassan married during his playing career and had three children. They later separated, while Hassan subsequently married Dan Adam, with whom he has two children, according to Egyptian media reports.
The renewed public attention produced a separate dispute between the two sides on social media. Dan responded to the coverage surrounding her husband’s former marriage, while El-Gharbawy’s television appearances continued to attract attention from Egyptian audiences.
By July, the dispute had become sufficiently prominent for other Egyptian public figures to comment publicly on the relationship between Hassan’s current and former wives.
What happened at the hotel
The latest confrontation appears to have taken the dispute beyond television appearances and social media.
Dan said Hassan was sitting with her at the hotel café when members of his former wife’s family approached them. She alleged that an argument followed and that she was physically attacked.
Other Egyptian reporting has described conflicting versions of the incident, including claims that Dan was involved in the confrontation before alleging that she herself had been assaulted. Those competing accounts have not been independently resolved.
Hassan was reportedly present during the confrontation and subsequently collapsed or fainted amid the disorder.
Police were called to the hotel and intervened. El-Gharbawy reportedly went to a police station to make a report before withdrawing her complaint.
The available reports do not establish whether any criminal case remains active, nor do they provide an official police account detailing responsibility for the alleged assaults.
From football icon to the centre of a family controversy
The episode comes at an unusual moment in Hassan’s public career.
The former Egypt striker is one of the country’s most recognisable football figures and now occupies one of the most scrutinised positions in Egyptian sport: coach of the national team.
His public profile has consequently expanded beyond football. During the 2026 World Cup period, his team’s performances generated considerable attention, while his wife’s social-media appearances and comments also became subjects of Egyptian media coverage.
That combination has made Hassan’s family life unusually visible.
In June, El-Gharbawy appeared with members of the family on Egyptian television, discussing Hassan’s personality as a father and recalling their years together. She described his desire to have a large family and his close relationship with their children.
Dan, meanwhile, has publicly presented herself as Hassan’s current wife and has previously defended their relationship against online criticism. In June, she said she was not pursuing legal action against critics despite an earlier statement from her lawyer suggesting otherwise.
The football consequences remain unclear
There is no indication from the available reports that the incident has resulted in disciplinary action against Hassan by the Egyptian Football Association or affected his position as national-team coach.
That distinction matters because the allegations concern a private family dispute rather than conduct during a football match or official team activity.
For now, the most consequential aspect of the episode may be reputational rather than sporting. Hassan’s role requires him to operate under intense public scrutiny, and the family dispute has increasingly become intertwined with his public identity.
The immediate facts remain narrower than some of the headlines surrounding the incident: a confrontation occurred at a North Coast hotel, police intervened, the parties have given competing accounts, and Hassan reportedly fainted during the disorder.
Beyond that, responsibility for the alleged physical attacks remains a matter of competing claims rather than an established finding.
