A strong earthquake measured at magnitude 7.4 struck Colombia on Monday morning, causing severe damage to buildings across the western part of the country.
The tremor occurred at 7:34 local time near the town of San José del Palmar, Chocó province, the Colombian Geological Service said in a preliminary bulletin posted to social media. The US Geological Survey said it measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.4.
In the nation’s capital, the tremor was felt strongly, alarms sounded, and in many buildings people evacuated to the streets as a precaution. “At this time there are no reports of injuries or structural damage, only some cracks in buildings,” Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán said on X.
