Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company CRED, has been appointed Global Head of WhatsApp as part of a broader strategic partnership between Meta and the fintech firm.
The appointment follows Meta’s reported $900 million minority investment in CRED, pushing the company’s valuation beyond $4.5 billion and marking one of the most significant collaborations between the social media giant and India’s fintech ecosystem.
Shah is expected to succeed Will Cathcart in leading WhatsApp’s global operations. The move is seen as a major leadership shift for the messaging platform as Meta intensifies efforts to expand payments, commerce, and financial services across its ecosystem.
Announcing the development in a LinkedIn post, Shah said: “Meta comes in as a minority investor in CRED. While it’s come very far, the delta between WhatsApp today and its full potential is massive. I look forward to working with Mark, Chris, and the leadership across Meta for the next step in WhatsApp’s journey.”
