British police have launched an intensive search for a Nigerian-born prisoner who escaped from custody while being transported from court in south-east London.

Temitope Segun, 25, escaped on Monday, June 8, while being moved from court to prison. Segun was serving a sentence for supplying Class A drugs, according to authorities.

The Metropolitan Police said Segun was last seen near Woolwich High Street at approximately 6:40 p.m. BST after allegedly assaulting a custody officer during transportation from Bromley Magistrates’ Court to HMP Thameside.

Investigators said Segun reportedly overpowered a guard inside a prison transport vehicle operated by private security contractor Serco before fleeing the scene.

Serco confirmed that it was responsible for the prisoner escort service and that an investigation into the incident is underway.

“A incident occurred on the evening of Monday 8 June in Woolwich. The matter is under investigation,” a company spokesperson said.

The company also disclosed that one member of staff was injured during the incident and is currently recovering at home.

Police described Segun as wearing a black jacket, black trousers and black trainers at the time of his escape. Authorities believe he may have connections to the areas of Plumstead, Abbey Wood and Woolwich.
