The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to strengthen traffic management and improve road safety across the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development on Monday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to the commissioner, motorists in Lagos will soon have the option of choosing between the existing federal driver’s licence and the proposed Lagos State-issued licence once the initiative becomes fully operational.
Osiyemi explained that the move is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, enhancing safety standards on roads, and making the licensing process more efficient for residents.
He also stated that the planned system is expected to reduce delays commonly experienced during driver’s licence applications and renewals under the current arrangement.
Providing updates on licensing activities in the state, the commissioner revealed that 56,876 driver’s licences were processed during the review period. This figure included 27,067 new applications and 29,810 renewals carried out in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He further disclosed that 1,158 international driver permits were issued within the same period.
Speaking on rail transportation projects, Osiyemi said the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
He added that the second phase of the Blue Line extension, which will run from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed and operational by the first quarter of 2027.
On developments concerning the Lagos Red Line Rail, the commissioner disclosed that the state government had acquired 24 additional train coaches arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger movement along the route.
Osiyemi also noted that work had intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, designed to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
