Several residents of an apartment building in Banana Island have raised concerns after becoming trapped inside an elevator for nearly 40 minutes, sparking discussions about safety standards in high-end residential buildings.
The incident reportedly occurred at an apartment complex located near Banana Island School.
A video shared on the social media platform X by a user identified as Anthony on Monday showed several occupants inside the lift appearing distressed and sweating as they struggled with the confined space.

In the footage, the trapped individuals could be heard expressing concern about the lack of immediate assistance, claiming they had already spent close to 40 minutes inside the stalled elevator.
“We are here in the lift of Banana Island School Apartment. We have been stuck here for almost 40 minutes,” one of the occupants said in the video.
“We are all about suffocating in here. Nobody seems to be doing anything about it.”
According to the user who posted the video, the occupants had contacted the landlord’s daughter to report the situation but were told that building management would “see what they could do.”
“We spoke to the landlady’s daughter; she said they will see what they can do. Can you imagine?” the user wrote in the accompanying post.
The incident has sparked reactions online, with many social media users calling for stricter maintenance standards and emergency response procedures in residential buildings across Lagos.
As of the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether building management has issued an official statement regarding the malfunction or whether the trapped occupants were safely evacuated shortly after the video was recorded.
Authorities and property managers are often advised to ensure elevators undergo routine safety inspections and that emergency response protocols are in place to prevent similar incidents.
