The King of Bangha in Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State, His Royal Majesty Suanu Timothy Baridam, narrowly escaped death on Sunday after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle while returning from an engagement in Okwale community.
Sources revealed that the attack occurred between Taabaa Junction and Sogho.
The assailants reportedly tried to stop the monarch’s vehicle, but the driver refused to halt.

Gunshots were then fired, injuring King Baridam in the leg and wounding the driver.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though preliminary reports suggest an attempt on the monarch’s life.
This is the second known assassination attempt on King Baridam. He is currently receiving medical attention in a Port Harcourt hospital.
Local Government Reacts
Reacting to the incident, Khana LGA Chairman Thomas Bariere condemned the attack, clarifying that it was unrelated to gang conflicts.
He explained that a criminal group has been operating in the area to intimidate residents and disrupt local business activities.
“Our goal is to ensure residents and investors feel safe.
Security agencies are actively monitoring the situation, and we are confident that the perpetrators will be apprehended,” Bariere said.
Calls for Thorough Investigation
The Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre has also called for a comprehensive probe into the attack.
In a statement, Executive Director Fyneface Dumnamene described the assault as an attack not only on the monarch but on the traditional institution itself.
“This cowardly act threatens the peace of Bangha Kingdom, Khana, Ogoni, and the Niger Delta region.
We urge the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice and call on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to ensure adequate protection for the King,” the statement read.
Police Confirm Attack
When contacted, Rivers State Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the shooting and stated that investigations are ongoing. “He sustained gunshot injuries but is responding to treatment. Our officers are actively investigating the matter,” she said.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the monarch in a hospital ward with a bandaged right ankle and blood still visible from the wound.
The manhunt for the assailants continues as authorities work to restore security and reassure residents of Khana LGA.
