Wolverhampton Wanderers Name Rob Edwards as New Head Coach in Relegation Fight

Wolverhampton Wanderers have named Rob Edwards as their new head coach on a contract running through the summer of 2029, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old arrives from Championship side Middlesbrough, where he had been in charge since June.

His appointment follows the dismissal of Vítor Pereira earlier this month after a dismal start to the season that left Wolves rooted to the bottom of the table.

Edwards steps into a daunting challenge: Wolves have earned only two points from their first 11 league matches, suffering nine defeats and sitting eight points adrift of safety.

The club’s eight-year tenure in the top flight is now under serious threat.

A familiar face at Molineux, Edwards made 111 appearances for Wolves as a player and later served in coaching roles, including a brief stint as interim manager.

His deep connection to the club was a key factor in the decision.

“Rob understands this club, the supporters, and the city,” said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi.

“He’s grown tremendously across his managerial roles and brings fresh ideas that will help us forge a new identity.”

Edwards’ most recent Premier League experience came with Luton Town, where he guided the club through a promotion campaign before managing them in the top flight.

Middlesbrough initially blocked Wolves’ approach, but Edwards made clear his wish to return to the West Midlands club.

He was relieved of duties for Middlesbrough’s weekend victory over Birmingham City.

Shi acknowledged the scale of the task ahead, stating: “We’re opening a new era for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Rob’s philosophy will be central to rebuilding confidence and performance across the entire organization.”

Edwards will take charge for the first time when Wolves host Crystal Palace on November 22, following the upcoming international break.

The club hopes the homecoming of one of its own can spark the turnaround needed to preserve Premier League status.
