Senegal Records First Case of Mpox Disease in 2025

Mpox outbreak

Senegalese health authorities have confirmed a case of mpox in a foreign man who entered the country last week. According to the health ministry, this is the first case detected in Senegal this year, though it remains unclear how many infections, if any, were reported before January.

In a statement released late Saturday, the ministry said the patient’s condition is stable. He is currently in isolation and receiving medical care, but officials did not specify which variant of the virus was identified. As of Monday, no additional cases had been recorded, though 25 individuals are being monitored as a precaution.

Mpox Disease

Mpox, which spreads through close contact, typically causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin lesions. While most cases are mild, the infection can occasionally be fatal. In August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighboring countries.
