The Senate on Thursday confirmed Dr. Bernard Doro as Nigeria’s new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, concluding President Bola Tinubu’s latest cabinet reshuffle aimed at strengthening the country’s social welfare and inclusion programmes.
Dr. Doro’s screening session lasted less than 30 minutes, with lawmakers unanimously commending his credentials and leadership record. The Plateau State-born technocrat, now the third minister from the state in the current administration, pledged to foster fairness, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s humanitarian interventions.
“I will create a humanitarian ecosystem that is inclusive, guided by impartiality and independence,” Doro told the Senate during his screening. His nomination was subsequently confirmed after the legislators asked him to “take a bow and leave.”
President Tinubu had earlier forwarded Doro’s name to the Senate for confirmation in line with Section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter during plenary and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration.
Dr. Doro succeeds Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who was recently appointed National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Doro as “a highly qualified professional with over two decades of experience across clinical practice, pharmaceutical management, and strategic leadership in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”
Born on January 23, 1969, in Kwall, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Doro holds degrees in Pharmacy and Law, an MBA in IT-driven Business Strategy, and a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice. He is also an Independent Prescriber and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with frontline experience in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), covering urgent care, GP practices, and hospital settings.
With Thursday’s confirmation, Dr. Doro is expected to be sworn in as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the next council meeting.
