Movement between Anambra and Delta states was disrupted on Wednesday after protesters blocked the Onitsha Head Bridge in opposition to the temporary closure of the Onitsha Main Market.
The protest followed a directive by Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, ordering a one-week shutdown of the market.
Viral videos circulating on social media showed traders and residents barricading access points to the bridge, chanting protest slogans and preventing vehicles from crossing.
In footage shared online, demonstrators were heard chanting phrases such as “No way in, no way out” and “Onitsha to Asaba blocked”, as they vowed to sustain the action until the directive was reversed.
The situation reportedly became tense at intervals, forcing some participants to withdraw as the crowd grew.
Beyond being a commercial hub, the Onitsha Main Market also serves as a place of residence for some traders, many of whom live within the market premises.
The closure, protesters said, not only halted trading activities but also displaced individuals who depend on the market as their primary shelter.
The shutdown was announced earlier in the week, triggering protests across Onitsha on Tuesday.
During those demonstrations, traders carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, including expressions of support for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Additional slogans heard in circulating videos included “Soludo, we no go gree” and “Say no to Monday”, reflecting growing frustration over the government’s decision.
The Onitsha Head Bridge is a critical transport link connecting Anambra State with neighbouring Delta State.
The blockade reportedly caused significant traffic congestion and restricted the movement of commuters, traders, and commercial vehicles for several hours.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been released by the state government or security agencies regarding the protest or measures to restore normal movement.
More details are expected as events continue to unfold.
